The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

(Titelbild: The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner) - Free Cinema, the British nouvelle vague of the early 60s, was shorter and less productive than the other European renewal movements. Between 1956 and 1959 works by former film critics such as Tony Richardson, Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz were performed in the National Film Theatre. Independently produced and financed, Free Cinema was entirely in keeping with British realism. The monotony between factory work and pleasure on weekends, exploitation and cramped living conditions present a grey Great Britain of the 60s. Free Cinema was able to look back on the British documentary film movement, clearly in the renunciation of artificial light and the preference for real locations. The cinema of the future should be open political and realistic and not entertaining at any price! Free Cinema already took the various colloquial dialects of English into account and immersed itself in the world of the underclass. Room at the top by Jack Clayton is considered the starting shot, followed by the still entertaining Saturday Night and Sunday Morning from 1960. Albert Finney became famous in the role of a factory daughter who otherwise only wants to have fun. Finally he falls in love and is confronted with the ideas of petty bourgeois happiness. Tony Richardson's A Taste of Honey from 1961 was one of the key films of Free Cinema, but it is mainly Richardson's literary films Look Back in anger and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, in which he worked closely with the authors, that have remained in memory. The aesthetics of Richardson's films determined British cinema right up to works such as Control (2007). The debut of Lindsay Anderson This sporting life is hardly known anymore, seems somewhat unwieldy and awkward in its attempt to appear realistic and modern at the same time. The best films in Free Cinema come from John Schlesinger, who himself was outside the movement. The innocent eye, Terminus and above all Billy Liar have that certain something that timeless classics need and in contrast to Richardson & Co also the necessary lightness. A few years later Free Cinema was called British New Wave and also understood itself in the fight against the superiority of Hollywood, which has always been both a blessing and a curse for British cinema.
