lost in translation

Only if you want to." Charlotte liegt allein in ihrem Hotelzimmer. A bittersweet reference to the transience of life. Lost In Translation is funny and sad at the same time and also quite gloating. Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray give two lost souls who meet in a hotel bar in Tokyo. Sometime at night. They talk about their marriages, happiness and the meaningfulness of the whole. These are conversations that you can only have with strangers. The statement that it is as if one knows each other for the rest of one's life implies that it is not so. Such conversations with friends would also be quite different. You know each other, you ask for details and backgrounds. But with strangers we can talk about anything beyond that. Irony of fate; while one's spouse no longer reaches this level with us, this is easy for a stranger. Especially when alcohol is involved... Murray is Bob Harris, an American movie star who is shooting a whiskey spot in Tokyo for two million dollars (although he could also be acting somewhere). His wife Lydia asks him on the phone if she has to worry: "Only if you want to." Johansson is Charlotte, a philosophy graduate who has been married to a famous photographer for two years. She tells a friend on the phone how strange her husband is to her. She is in her early 20s, Harris in her mid 50s. The classic starting point for a romance brand "young girl - old man". Fortunately, Lost In Translation is not such a film, but intelligent and funny. Sofia Coppola doesn't send the two to bed to find answers. Both share something personal, but not body fluids. Wonderful, the two leading actors! Murray was never better. He is stuck, knows that too, but has resigned himself to it. Sometimes his wife is on the phone - always on autopilot. He loves his children. He hates himself for producing commercials and is very tired. In good moments he can be charming and funny. But I think life is a nuisance for Harris. Charlotte lies alone in her hotel room. Her husband talks about his work and himself. He believes that the marriage is also okay for Charlotte. But because she feels so lost and alone, she speaks to Bob Harris in the hotel bar (important: not because he's a star). With friends she goes to drunken karaoke parties (where great music by The Pretenders and Roxy Music is played). As they drift through Tokyo, Charlotte and Bob have conversations that are not extensive, but full of understanding. Almost as if they were all alone in this city full of aliens. Who would expect a comedy now? But Lost In Translation lives from Murray's laconic humor. Again and again there are possibilities to revive the old comedian of the 80s. But Murray resists, always remains Bob Harris. I love lost In Translation! How Coppola and her actors keep the balance between comedy and profundity! How they win their beautiful, very romantic moments! How Bob and Charlotte don't solve their problems. In the end, Bob whispers something into her ear that we don't understand. Charlotte smiles confidently. It's not for our ears, but an intimate conversation between the two. That's the point. Bob and Harris are accepted by us as real characters, to whom we like to leave their privacy. Did he whisper that he loves them? Did he thank you? Did he give her his phone number? The movie is over and we have to get out. Sometimes you stumble down the cinema stairs. And we loved being in Tokyo, in Lost In Translation! Which films have this magic? That's what this Film List is about. (We don't provide the films, only the links.) (Picture: imdb.com)
