- The older science fiction films become, the more ridiculous they often look. What used to be high tech is now cute at best. It seems naïve how one imagined the very near future: Social and technical developments were generally totally missed. Do the films stand up to today's judgement? The selection of this list shows timeless dystopics like Brazil, The Quiet Earth, 1984 or Tetsuo. But what about Carpenters They live or Camerons The abyss? Still romantic portraits of their time with this feeling of wanting to see them again! Altogether the 80s were the decade after Star Wars. Gone are the days of serious science fiction movies with classics like Soylent green or Silent Running. Let's go to the big movie stop, to action in space! For once, however, there were films that thought about the future of mankind: Philosophically and abstractly as in Blade Runner or Lars von Trier's debut Element of crime. Predominantly dominant are the hateful end-times Gemetzel a la Mad Max or Robocop as well as the numerous genres Hybrids like The Terminator or Aliens. Worth mentioning are the European productions: Luc Bessons Le Dernier Combat, the undercooled British Space Western Outland, the shrill Kamikaze 1989 and the satirical Kin-dsa-dsa! from the USSR. But what really defines the 80s and was not produced again is the cuddly and feel-good fiction in Back to the future or the visionary optimism of Star Trek II.
