- Like Singapore or Taiwan, Thailand was for a long time a film self-sufficient country: until the 70s, around 100 films were produced annually, cheaply produced on 16mm as fast food. Finally Hollywood discovered the market, spread via television and DVD until the opening of multiplex cinemas almost drove the Thai film to collapse. Whoever knows films like Butterfkies and lowers, Sunset or Once upon a time this morning from the Thai cinema of the 80s is a real cinematographer, more titles could hardly be enumerated until 1997. 1997 was the turning point; Fun Bar Karaoke appeared, a kind of Thai Wong Kar-wai. Dang Birelley and young gangster, on the other hand, is a tough gangster ballad reminiscent of good Hogkong movies. In the wake of the Asian horror wave, Nang Nak, a film that was distributed worldwide, appeared. 6Ixty-nin9 is a black comedy and has received the most international attention to date alongside Nang Nak. Archipatpong Weerasethakul's low budget production Mysterious object at noon was the first Arthaus film to draw the attention of the West. Like Phoenix from the Ashes is the most accurate description of what happened in 2000: Bang raja and The iron ladies were the most successful movies of the year in Thailand. Bang rajan is a seasoned battle painting, The iron ladies shows a not particularly recognized fringe group; the Lady Boys. The brothers Danny and Oxide Pang (coming from Hong Kong) finally became the epitome of successful films from Thailand, Bangkok dangerous contains like all films of the brothers more style exercise than content and makes use of Wong Kar-wais deaf-mute killer from Fallen angels. The most expensive Thai film was realized by the prince: Surithai, allegedly financed directly from the royal treasury. The film deals with a national concern, a historical heroic epic. The production company Film Bangkok produced the Thai Western Tears of the black tiger in incredible psychedelic colours, a Western like never before! More and more films from Thailand are produced in cooperation with Hong Kong or Japan, which means for the future: Thailand stays on the cinema map.
