- At the bottom of the Filmkunstbar Fitzcarraldo, in our DVD archive, there is also a shelf of the soviet agitprop film. Huge variety of shapes, assembly technology - never seen again! During the Achtung-Berlin Festival, this pretty animation documentary about the real October 1917, based on research and newly discovered source material, diaries and literature - like a big survey. How was it really then? What must it have been like to live as an artist in these revolutionary times? The First World War was approaching, the people were starving and anxious. In February the Czar was overthrown and the call for freedom and revolution was heard everywhere! Unfortunately, peace did not come after all, for from 1917 the Bolsheviks ruled alone. But what happened to the avant-gardists and artists? What happened to Maxim Gorky and Kasimir Malevich during this radical change? Five of them are in Katrin Rothe's documentary. They appear as laying figures, which are moved in the same way. Before us, the director creates a mix of animations, drawings, silhouettes and archive material, bringing history to life. Life between idealism and disillusionment. I myself am very interested in the 1917 revolution as a prototype of every revolution. The greedy dictatorship is overthrown and replaced by new ones who believe they are the only real weapon. And what is more terrible than an idealist who converts others by force?
