The adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Ivanhoe, Knights of the round table. - Well-dressed knights and vagabonds, acrobatic fencing fights, beautiful damsels; the classic coat and sword film has something of ballet. The audience especially loved single resisters against the authorities. Errol Flynn is the ideal embodiment of the daredevil who fights for the good. With acrobatic suppleness Flynn fights, climbs and fights his way through Sherwood Forest as Robin Hood and ushered in a new era (The adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Everything goes back to Dumas and his novel The Three Musketeers, a 17th century myth. There are countless film adaptations, but the most beautiful remains the one from 1948. Fanfan is the second popular character in France who has been filmed again and again, but none comes close to the version from 1952 with Gerard Philipe and Gina Lollobrigida. At the beginning of the 60s it was Belmondo as helper of the oppressed and Claudia Cardinale in the secret classic Cartouche that brought a breath of fresh air to the genre, because Cartouche changes into a melodrama. In England it was the knight films like Scaramouche with Sterwart Granger. Ivanhoe, Knights of the round table. In the USA, the genre celebrated its climax in the early 60s under the sign of Zorro. The Mexican screen hero fought for the oppressed Bauen. Tyrone Power had already put on the black mask in 1921, but the real breakthrough came in the early 60's with a series of Zorro movies. Sometime in the 80's the production of Zorro movies had gone back and the coat and sword movie somehow no longer up-to-date. Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975) marked something like an endpoint, although the work had nothing in common with the naivety of the earlier films.
