- Downstairs in the small room of our DVD archive in the basement you will find a section with surrealistic animation and puppet films. Every jubilee year I can put up a new DVD there and with Gint Zilbalodi's "Away" it's time again. He animated it all by himself, you can read. Just like a "malickesque" anime movie. All right? Anyway, "Away" offers a lot of breathtaking beauty, wonderfully composed landscapes and very little of traditional narrative patterns. The emotions are created solely by the aesthetic skills of Zilbalodi. It's all about miracles. About the power of nature exerting it on a young man (without a name) who is trapped alone on a mystical island. Underlaid with a meditative score, which Zilbalodis also composed himself. So in the future one can expect a lot from this total filmmaker from Latvia! The young man (actually still a teenager) crashes over the island. He crosses the island in search of a way out. He gets company from a bird and a pack of black cats guarding a monster. A geyser that chases our hero. It never stops chasing him until it swallows him whole. Does this monster even exist? Or must we think of it as an inner demon? At this point it becomes clear: "Away" could use a little more tension! Zilbalodis is best at spreading animated bliss. When the sky above the young hero is reflected in the water or he finds a parachute in the middle of the barren land. You can see how many long years of work went into each picture. This is a meticulously crafted work of art! And in its best moments it takes us to this other world, there on the island...
