Babylon is the work of an obsessed geek! Damien Chazelle's films are about people who are willing to endure physical and emotional torment to get where they want to go! Whether it's achieving a flawless tempo while playing the drums or racing into space. Babylon is about how the cinematic images of the golden 20s that felt like magic were actually the product of incredibly hard work, broken dreams and a whole lot of luck. An antithesis to Chezelle's sentimental La La Land (DVD9941). Anyone who has ever witnessed a film shoot knows how arduous it is to produce 2 seconds of footage. Extras have to be guided, a camera borrowed.... None of this is easy - even if it makes everything look like a lot of fun. I think that's why I much prefer to be a videographer and consumer. The fundamental question in Babylon: Is it all worth it? Chazelle's lip service: Yes! But along the way, he drags his characters through so much misanthropy that it's hard to believe him. This is a Feel Bad movie about Hollywood! And so it all begins with the story of Mexican outsider Manny Torres (Diego Calva), who comes to the City of Angels during the silent film era. He tries to bring an elephant to a drug - and sex-soaked party. What does it look like? Well, just read Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon and it will leave you speechless. Enter Hollywood starlet Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), who catches Manny's attention. And silent movie star Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), sleazy, slick, just separating from his third wife. In the background, what they are all afraid of begins. The talkies are catching on. Will his own career stand up to it? Babylon is an ensemble piece, led by Margot Robbie and the terrific Brad Pitt. Pitt conveys a sense of lost glory that at times seems almost personal. For 30 years he has seen stars come and go and draws from that a sense of deep melancholy. Hollywood outsiders don't understand that they are just part of a system. They can't believe that this system doesn't give a damn about them. Everyone is replaceable, even the stars. And if you look closely, you'll notice how much Chazelle has done his homework and certainly read Hollywood Babylon thoroughly. Craft-wise, it's perfect. But is Babylon as good as its individual parts (soundtrack, cinematography, editing)? Stupidly, Chazelle's approach is as cynical as his film. Is it all worth it? The film argues something like we would never have seen the great Technicolor musicals had not so many dreams been shattered along the way. That's superficial and also hypocritical, because it's only superficially attacking the film industry system here. In truth, Chazelle is part of the system. After all, how can his beloved cinematography destroy people and dreams as long as the party goes on?
