- God bless Paul Verhoeven, the great provocateur, who this year chooses Catholic images to question all that is commonly understood as Catholicism. Of course, Verhoeven has already turned a film festival against himself with this, and of course Benedetta is only evaluated very briefly in the cinema. For Verhoeven sexualizes religion quite explicitly and we may now argue whether this is a) exploitation or b) profound analysis? Or to put it another way: how do gender biases affect abuse and violence? The beauty of this is that Verhoeven has intentionally overloaded his script so that the analytical is juxtaposed with the gimmicky. Certainly Benedetta is the film Verhoeven HAD to make, as it encapsulates all of the Dutchman's themes: Sex, provocation, corruption and violence. And if you don't like some of it, you still won't be able to ignore Benedetta. Because no Verhoeven film can do that! In any case, Benedetta Carlini was a 17th century nun who had an affair with another nun. She was stripped of her rank, imprisoned. The papacy was informed. Benedetta professed to be receiving stigmata. She heard voices. Then Jesus personally visited the nun. Who, after all, told her he would marry her.... Benedetta lives in a world where the female body is perceived as sinful. This is exactly what he investigates and puts the female body on full display. In doing so, he relies on the very carnal needs that are filtered by religion. the body of Benedetta does not belong to her already as a child. Later it is hawked to the church. It always remains property. We begin to take Verhoeven's film seriously just at the moment when a comet and a plague appear and everything goes to hell. It makes you wonder if you did Verhoeven an injustice to take him so seriously? And that's the crux of what makes Verhoeven's films so special. Whether that succeeds here as well as in earlier works? Give it away! God bless Verhoeven, who tries this tightrope act over and over again!
