Caroline ist entschlossen, dass ihre Ehe funktionieren wird. Toby ist sich da nicht so sicher. Er erkennt sofort, dass Dwight nicht echt ist. Hinter der Fassade verbirgt sich ein gemeiner Kerl. Sein Erzfeind. Dwight ist beides; unangenehm und lächerlich. Ein Mann, der versucht, sein geringes Selbstwertgefühl zu verbergen, ein Sadist und Lügner. Vermutlich erkennt das auch Caroline, doch sie hat sich nun einmal entschieden. Toby jedenfalls ist so gezwungen, schneller erwachsen zu werden und Verantwortung zu übernehmen. Was ihn am Leben hält ist die Vorstellung, dass es bessere Orte geben muss - ohne Dwight. Solche wie Yale, dort, wo sein Bruder studiert. Jeder Ort, nur nicht Concrete! This Boy's Life erinnert uns an die Wunden der Kindheit - denn selbst, wenn wir glücklich aufwuchsen, gibt es die. Toby Kindheit wird von Dwight überschattet, der krank ist, ein erbärmlicher Bösewicht und im Grunde selbst noch Kind. Caroline wants to marry Dwight. She has no better idea. He offers her security and income and could become something like a father to Toby. Caroline is determined that her marriage will work. Toby isn't so sure. He immediately realizes that Dwight isn't genuine. Behind the façade hides a mean guy. His arch-enemy. Dwight is both unpleasant and ridiculous. A man who tries to hide his low self-esteem, a sadist and a liar. Caroline probably realizes this too, but she has made her decision. Toby, at any rate, is forced to grow up faster and take on responsibility. What keeps him going is the idea that there must be better places—without Dwight. Places like Yale, where his brother is studying. Any place but Concrete! The great thing about This Boy's Life is that Ellen Barkin and the young Leonardo DiCaprio are outshone by De Niro in one of his most memorable roles. This Boy's Life reminds us of the wounds of childhood—because even if we grew up happy, they are still there. Toby's childhood is overshadowed by Dwight, who is sick, a pathetic villain, and basically still a child himself. It's Dwight's bad luck that he got Toby as his foster son; Toby, who sees through it all.
