Denn: "We’re horny and we’re selfish", so Bobby. Die Message aber ist schön: “We fight like crazy, and we always have, but you’re my people.” - Bros is touted as the first mainstream gay comedy. Produced by Judd Apatow in the spirit of classic romantic comedies, such as those starring Meg Ryan. The only contradiction: the constant commentary on mainstreaming queerness vs. a Hollywood formula comedy. Billy Eichner (who also co-wrote the script) plays Bobby Leiber, born and raised in New York. Bobby writes a podcast about queer history. he also serves as the director of a museum of LGBTQ history that is about to open. Bobby, 40, spends most of his time alone, well aware that he is so much better off. Because: "We're horny and we're selfish", says Bobby. He explains this to his friends and that's why he prefers affairs to a long relationship. But then Aaron (Luke Macfarlane) steps in and they both decide to be emotionally unavailable. What follows is a RomCom by the book full of dating, sex, fighting and.... The music is by Nat King Cole and one is reminded of the comedies of Nora Ephron. On the occasion of the museum's opening, of course, a whole host of characters appear, each of whom corresponds to a cliché. The feisty bi-sexual, the black trans woman or a non-binary person. In short, queer identity is used as a springboard for jokes. One thing, however, Bros has simply forgotten: When Harry Met Sally (DVD1461) was so successful because all the characters in the film felt like real people. The characters in Bros, on the other hand, remain underdeveloped. But there is plenty of biting humour and razor-sharp jokes, and all the icons are mentioned, whether Barbra Streisand, Cher or Mariah Carey. After all, all this has long been commercialised in modern entertainment culture, and Bros is navigating exactly the same waters (despite all efforts at satire). But the message is beautiful: "We fight like crazy, and we always have, but you're my people. If you've had a rummage through our DVD archive, you'll discover the history of queer indie film. These are the works that Bros never cites and completely neglects in concentrating on When Harry Met Sally. The point of Bobby Museums seems to be to show a queer prism. But the film fails to look at cinema in the same way.
