- It was Quentin_Tarantino, whose opinion was influential for the cinema during the 90s. He wrote he needed a handkerchief when he looked at Chungking Express. By the way, not because the movie is so sad, but so good! My own handkerchief stayed dry, but I understand what he means. Chungking Express is a film for geeks who love film. film per se. Less about the story or the stars. Chungking Express works on a deeper level and doesn't reveal all its secrets at first. Hong Kong legend Wong Kar-Wai is not without reason called a descendant of the Nouvelle Vague! He deals with the MATERIAL of the film, not with the story itself. What's more, he tells two stories at once that have nothing to do with each other on the surface. They take place in the world of fast food restaurants and shopping centres. Everything shines here, it's pop culture. One of his protagonists wears a blonde wig and dark sunglasses; another seems to have travelled to Hong Kong in the 1960s. Hipster! Wong Kar-Wai moves somewhere between classical cinema, music videos and photography. He loves slow motion and he loves to break his characters in media overkill. All right? If you're a stylist, you like Chungking Express. But if you'd rather follow a plot, Chungking Express will be a frustrating exercise. Appearance of the policeman He Qiwu (Takeshi Kaneshiro), who walks alone and depressively through the night of the big city. In 30 days he wants to find a missing girl. Then the woman in the blonde wig who's involved in drug dealing comes into his life. We expect a dark love story. Wong Kar-Wai, however, simply breaks off and diverts the action to another couple. In the fast food restaurant, where He Qiwu spends the nights, a beautiful waitress (Faye Wang) works. She only has eyes for a second cop (Tony Chiu-Wai Leung), who pays little attention to her. That's why she gets the key to his apartment, spends time in it while he's away, does his laundry and cleans everything. Both storylines are about loneliness and being lost in the metropolis. Wong Kar-Wai mixes the action with a pinch of music video, nouvelle vague (slogans, pop songs) and early New York indie cinema of the 60s (improvised dialogues and situations). What happens to the characters now? But that's not the point. Not the destination, the journey is. A journey into despair, on the verge of madness. Quentin_Tarantino loved Chungking Express so much that he set up his own distribution company with Miramax. Of course there were other great Hong Kong directors in the 90s, but Wong Kar-Wai was the artist among them. The one who played with the medium of film. Back in the'60s, there was an audience for such films. In the 90s it was less and yet people were eager to watch such music videos in long format. But it wasn't so much about understanding as about STYLE. Who really wanted to put the Chungking Express puzzle together? A work that knows a lot about cinema and little about life.
