- By the time Tony Pino was ready to raid the Brinks office, he had already spent more time there than most of the employees. Tony was surprised at how easy it was in itself to overcome the security precautions at Brinks. A piece of cake! But foolishly, Toby was also acting like a child. By the time the robbery was carried out, half of Boston already knew who was involved.... The Brink's Job by William Friedkin was purchased from us with the urgent recommendation of Thomas Groh. Thomas was always surprised that not every customer of our video store wanted to rent The Brink's Job immediately and without further ado! It is just as surprising that Friedkin's film was not a success at the box office! Yet The Brink's Job is a fascinating (and very funny) crook film! Most people would associate Friedkin with lots of blood and shock effects! The man who seemed like a harbinger of blockbuster cinema in the early 70s. But here, with a light hand, he presents a whole cast of characters in a truly humanistic comedy. They were all most definitely born to hang out as mugshots at some point. Set in Boston during the 1950s, The Brink's Jon also works as a costume film. Everything is right, the clothes, the restaurants, the streets. This is Tony Pino, fresh out of prison, at home. And as always, he is waiting for the next big score. He scouts out properties, recruits partners. He climbs onto roofs, makes observations with binoculars. As usual in such heist movies, it's all about how the gang is going to get in and out of Brinks (which seems almost impossible at first). We get to know the premises at Brinks as well as the individual gang members. We even manage to get our bearings at Brinks - as if we were planning a heist ourselves. Friedkin's characters are realistic (that's what distinguishes the term New Hollywood) and funny. We share their feelings and identify with them. And along the way, the comedy develops smoothly into a thriller. The Brink's Jon, however, is so smoothly directed that it's only when you see it a second time that you realise how perfect the direction is! And the characters are perfectly cast! And the dialogue almost sounds like it was written! In a nutshell, The Brink's Job is one of the classics of the genre and ranks seamlessly with the best of its kind (I agree with Thomas just as seamlessly).
