- FREE ON YOUTUBE Claude Chabrol may be considered the founder of the Nouvelle Vague. He created moral thrillers and wrote one of the most interesting books about Alfred-Hitchcock. Like no other, he studied the illness of the French bourgeoisie. And he is the creator of the Fritz Lang homage Dr. M, in which STYLE is everything. The content doesn't count for anything. Dr M was a box-office disaster and is now considered an obscure work. The opening sequence takes an inordinately long time. Three plot elements, each ending with death, are crossed. Only connected by a TV show. Everything burns and explodes in Chabrol's science fiction production. The best part: Dr. M takes place in the future, as Berlin is still divided by a wall. It's just stupid that this very wall fell before the movie was released. Chabrol's film is still set in West Berlin and has the dirty look of the 80s. One of the leading roles: The great Jennifer Beals, who didn't have a hit after "Flashdance". Of course she is introduced in a club. With flickering strobe lights and deafening sound. Berlin is haunted by a series of suicides. And somehow they have something to do with the beautiful Sonja Vogler alias Jennifer Beals. Is the killer obsessed with her? All suicides are connected to each other, always a mysterious company logo appears (funny that the police officers only come across it after about 45 minutes!) Is the eerie Dr. Marsfeldt (Alan Bates) or Dr. M behind all this? Is he behind the company logo? And what role does he play in the Berlin police? And what connection does he have to Sonja? Obviously Dr. M earns money from the suicides and the mass panic that is developing in Berlin. But the crime plot remains secondary. What counts are the surface stimuli and Chabrol's convoluted insight that we are all manipulated.
