- I often think of the GDR, a country I don't even come from. But the GDR was all around my little country of West Berlin. When we drove to school in the morning, along the Wall path, the border guard looked down on us from his tower. And if you kicked the football over the Wall, it wouldn't come back. Here comes Aelrun Goette's film based on "true events" from her own life. Every GDR citizen might still know "Sybille", a fashion magazine from the state fashion institute. In fact, "Sybille" also set international standards in terms of style. Enter Suzie (but Schulz not Quatro), played by Marlene Burow. She grows up on the outskirts of East Berlin. She dreams of studying literature. But nothing comes of it after a copy of "1984" is found in her room. Reading it means: cable factory instead of university. There, her colleagues in the brigade make life extra difficult for her. And at home, her father and sister see to it. Suzie wants to get out of the suburban idyll! And one day she ends up on the catwalk of VEB Exquisit... And she gets to know the East Berlin underground and the gay institute employee Rudi (Sabin Tambrea), until the GDR system strikes back with pressure. If you read more about Aelrun Goette, you will learn that she was also discovered as a model in 1989, before she produced films in Babelsberg. Suzie's story often seems flat, for example when she lives by her dead mother's maxim "Only when we dream are we free". But the settings are great, as is the Eastalgia décor, which is accurate in every detail! I'm just not quite sure whether younger people who grew up without GDR experience feel the same way.
