- This is the unspeakably sad film about the friendship of two men who cannot talk about their feelings, a film of winning and losing in the game of life! All this takes place in the exhilaratingly beautiful Alpine valley of Aosta on the slopes of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. The Eight Mountains, however, refers to the highest peaks of Nepal, the symbol of worldly ambition. The novel adaptation by Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch is a meditation on whether we are capable of love. A gift that is shaped in childhood. It begins with the friendship of two 12-year-old boys named Pietro and Bruno. Pietro's family goes to the countryside to escape the stench of Turin. There, Pietro becomes friends with Bruno. Together they roam through magical places and into the distance. But the friendship of both is destroyed by Pietro's parents with their offer to Bruno to move to the big city after all. Bruno's father is against his boy attending high school in Turin and takes him to his construction site. Pietro will never forgive his father for separating him from Bruno. Never again will he speak to his father. But fate is to reunite them as young men. Since neither of them has a job, Bruno suggests that they build a hut in the woods. It becomes their very special place. Here they try to find their childhood again and their love for each other. Pietro, however, has to make the discovery that in recent years his father has become Bruno's friend, even father-substitute. He also discovers that the young woman he is interested in only has eyes for Bruno. So he leaves Bruno, goes to Nepal, becomes a celebrated writer. And yet he never lets go of the feeling that his friendship with Bruno was the best thing in his life - that Bruno is the better man.
