- This is the story of a genius accompanied by a less gifted artist. The promotional tour of David Foster Wallace, who has just released "Infinite Jest" and David Lipsky, who writes for "Rolling Stone". A cultural giant and a reporter who dreams of one day experiencing similar heights of artistic consecration. Fortunately, The End Of The Tour is not a biopic about David Foster Wallace! Wallace (Jason Segel) basically only plays the second leading role. In focus we experience Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg), who absorbs "Infinite Jest" just as enthusiastically as jealously. Here follows obviously one of his obsession! Lipsky himself, however, has only just managed a publication and now hopes to promote his career through his connection to Wallace. There's a dance between Wallace and Lipsky. One listens to the other about his experiences and the meaning of the term "authenticity". A complex relationship that is even told for both characters in different genres: For Wallce, the film chooses the light drama with features of a romance. The story of a person who has to learn again to trust and even love others. Lipsky, on the other hand, does not have Wallace's intellect. He is clever, can listen well and thinks he is Wallace's equal - one day... Wallace himself believes that, by the way. But why? I think because he's a teacher and wants to believe in his good students. Maybe he's trying not to focus on his ego. Or he's just optimistic! Lipsky seems to me like someone who uses other people, but Wallace disregards all warning signals. Lipsky's party is almost like a vampire story! Both actors, Segel and Eisenberg, seem to understand this relationship intuitively. There are moments in the movie when we don't like Lispky. Then again he appears charming. But is it absolutely necessary that THE David Foster Wallace plays along? The best thing about The End Of The Tour is that it's about creative people in general! (transl. deepl.com)
