- Nothing in life is certain, except that you have to take down the rubbish. And pay taxes. And pay 55 euros for cycling on the pavement. That's what this quirky journey through the universe is all about, discovering some metaphysical truths. Everything Everywhere... is also a declaration of love to the genre of cinema and a great reunion with Michelle Yeoh! For the first time we see her happy with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) and their daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu). They look through the mirror in the living room and smile. Until the camera zooms through the mirror. Now she is no longer smiling. Instead, she sits at a table full of bills and receipts. At the same time, she is trying to cook for the Chinese New Year celebration. After the tax audit, she will then talk to her husband about the marriage. For clearly Yeoh's Evelyn is hopelessly overwhelmed by life. But then she is surprised by another version of Waymond from Alpha Verse. In Alpha Verse, people speak in verse and are threatened by the agent Jobu Tupaki. Or something like that. Anyway, Evelyn is soon thrust into this universe for adventure. In the process, she will question everything she seems to know about love, her family, life. Yet most of the action actually takes place in the tax office. And so we find ourselves in an endless office to witness the struggle to save the universe.... Oh no, we are in different universes that merge into each other and all this is filmed at breakneck speed with frenetic dialogue. For those who have editing films as a hobby; this is the work of a master! And for all you geeks; there are references here from The Matrix to 2001 and of course Yeoh's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. And the fight scenes are taken really seriously too! If you find all this confusing, rest assured, Yeoh is the lynchpin of the film. She holds it all together. And in fleeting moments, this chaos even makes sense! Like that we should choose compassion and understanding over judgement and rejection. These are moments of love and sometimes they just happen.
