They need to adore me - to Christian Dior me". - Here comes a heroine with whom we can identify because she achieves great things and - well - just is who she is. Her name is Eva Perron (Madonna), she starts out as a quasi-prostitute, marries a powerful man, locks him out of the bedroom and moves the masses by spending enormous amounts of money on herself: "They need to adore me - to Christian Dior me". Eva Perron was famous because she was famous. This fame continued after her death, as her body was artfully embalmed. The dead woman was exhibited in Europe and her coffin was welded with steel in Argentina. Eva was only 33 years old. And what was she really like? Did she abandon her shaken people to give glamour to a fascist dictatorship? Did she distract from the fact that her husband was protecting Nazi criminals? She was a narcissist with her furs and diamonds and when she sings; "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina"; it simply means that Argentina need not cry for her. After all, she had everything, a life of luxury! The Argentines cry for their country, but not for her, and it is Che (Antonio Banderas) who asks her the questions we would also like to ask her. Evita, however, lacks any kind of self-doubt. On the surface, the musical celebrates a legendary woman and, more subtly, a morally botched life. Alan Parker is just the right director for this material! Not only has he directed more musicals than anyone else of his generation! Parker is also able to create a magnificent soap opera out of Evita's life! Evita consists almost entirely of music, with only a very few lines delivered as dialogue. Madonna plays and sings superbly. She IS Evita, the unwanted street child, the desirable lover and nightclub singer and finally the political leader - even if the Che points out contradictions in her biography. But with Evita there are no contradictions, because everything she does is due to her IMAGE. "Share my glory"; sings Evita and that sums it up. The poor could not share her glory if she were only poor. And so Alan Parker's Evita is also worth the money.
