"I was the world to them". ON YOUTUBE This is the story of two children running away from their parents. She is an Irish girl named Felicia (Elaine Cassidy). Her love belongs to Johnny (Peter McDonald). Felicia is pregnant by Johnny, but Johnny disappears. Felicia's father, an Irish nationalist, claims that Johnny went to the English. He would never agree to a wedding. Now Felicia is looking for Johnny, who promised to write every day. He never wrote. Performance by Hilditch (Bob Hoskins), who lives alone in a huge house and cooks ambitious meals that he eats all by himself. Hilditch picks up Felicia, who is looking for Johnny. He asks for his help. He would take her to the nearest town where his wife is a patient in hospital. Instinctively we know that Felicia is in danger. Hilditch has no wife and is up to something... Director Atom Egoyan, however, shows understanding for both characters. Felicia is innocent. Hilditch is the product of a bad childhood. He wasn't abused, rather suffocated. Too much of everything. Also too much love. He matured into an evil person who learned how to imagine himself as a "good" boy. One who visits young and helpless girls and offers them his help. He speaks of his lost girls. "I was the world to them". Egoyan's thriller is a subconscious grasp. He hardly offers scenes of pathos or big emotions. These are sequences that will only unfold their full force much later...
