In Helsinki. - A tender and melancholic boxer Biopic from Finland ran this year in Cannes (and was also awarded!). Wonderfully unagitated from the very beginning until the "finish"! It is the story of the boxer Olli Mäki (Jarkko Lahti), who is allowed to compete against the American world champion in featherweight in 1962. In Helsinki. In reality, however, the whole thing is a publicity show by his manager Elis (Eero Milonoff), who is struggling with financial problems. The poor amateur against the superstar, that's the stuff boxer movies are made of! Only that Olli is as light as a feather. Shortly before the fight he falls in love with Raija (Oona Airola), but this love makes him despondent and sceptical. Olli, the gosse Grübler, who has nothing to do with the PR around him. Kuosmanen films this so unobtrusively that it would have impressed even an established filmmaker - but the Finn is a debutant! He follows the conventions of documentary films and also shows a love for the New Wave of his time; yet Kuosmanen manages to meet his very own tone. This dear Fim does not take the time to transfigure nostalgia. It takes place in the early 60s at a time when pathetic Olli is waiting for better days. (transl. deepl.com)
