FREE ON YOUTUBE (DU FINDEST DEN GANZEN FILM FREI AUF YOUTUBE) Jules Dassins "Up Tight" ist eine unverblümte Darstellung schwarzer Militanz bzw. Black Power. - Jules Dassin's "Up Tight" is a blunt depiction of black militancy or black power. Fortunately, there is no moment of false reconciliation and no moderation at all! We witness the conviction of black militants with no consolation provided for white liberals. And white racists? They will react in horror, I think. Uptight takes the gall to show the black ghetto and with full fury. The blacks here are indeed black and are never treated as special cases - portrayed by stars like Denzel Washington, etc., for example. Uptight is aimed at blacks and not at whites. Anyone wondering why Paramount would fund something like this? Well, Uptight was released in 1968. It was a film that did not distort American reality and hardly found any imitators in the following decades. Uptight is a good and interesting film, but more for its individual parts. There are strong actors and very direct dialogue that rings true. Moments of truth are demonstrated, such as when police officers gun down a black man (while neighbours throw tin cans). As a whole, Uptight is not perfect, nor does it need to be. Incidentally, it serves as a kind of retelling of the Irish Revolution, simply transposed to the US. A concept that, of course, cannot work. Can you equate the Black Power Revolution with the Irish one? No. Uptight works with a specific time and place. This is not a parable. I also find Dassin's directing style a little difficult, it seems too artistic for what he is telling. Sometimes the ghetto almost looks like a Hollywood set and the colours don't look very realistic. Why not just shoot in grainy black and white? Everything seems a bit stylised. Sometimes you feel like you're in a dream. Dassin did this more often in his career, artificialising his films so that he almost missed the point. But in return there are great actors like Julian Mayfield as the informer Tank, who can barely articulate himself and is unaware of his motives. It is certainly an inverse experience for black people to watch white people being hit in the film. The same feeling is conveyed here that black people have known for years. Uptight is an important step to end these times forever.
