Man sieht gar nichts. Alles schwarz. - You can't see a thing. All black. You hear a dry cough. Then we see a bartender putting a customer's coin in the till. Virus! Contagion, we think immediately. Especially today; 2020. Contagion appeared in 2011 and is about a worldwide epidemic. Steven Soderbergh marketed Contagion like a thriller. But it's about an airborne virus. Today I read in the picture that Corona is also transmitted via airborne particles of dirt. That's how the Contagion virus penetrates people and spreads relentlessly in a very short time. The sequence of events: alarming signs, raids, the fight for a vaccine and... ...and finally the production of a vaccine. The virus in Contagion resists all isolation and is difficult to cure. It is a life form in search of a host. A human host. And it is constantly seeking new hosts because its carriers are dying. That's why it must always be one step ahead of death. You might call this virus an alien species that's invading from the inside. Contagion starts in Europe in a similar way to the corona epidemic. The initial cough is from Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow). She just came from China. Then Beth's son dies and her husband Mitch (Matt Damon) is traumatized by how quickly a family dissolves. But Beth was not infected through sexual intercourse. This virus is not called AIDS. There is a brief treatise on where the virus could come from. But this is incidental in the age of Easy Jet. Within a day the virus can reach any continent. That's why it is counted. Day one, day two, day three... Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) and Dr. Erin Mears (Kate Winslet) try to track the spread. Dr. Leonora Orantes (Marion Cotillard) investigates for the World Health Organization in Geneva. They are all impatient, losing time. Soderbergh stages the virus as a hostile life form, which of course sounds unscientific. It would have been more correct to explain the virus as a kind of free rider. Nevertheless, Soderbergh takes the scientific work of the virologists seriously and may even have made the only film that works adequately in our days of the corona virus. Interesting is the aspect of confusion. This is where Alan Krumwiede (Jude Law) comes into play, who brings all kinds of conspiracy theories to the people on his block. These days I hear them often: The Americans (sometimes also the Russians or Chinese) have bred Corona... Alan thinks that the pharmaceutical companies are behind it. The rules in Contagion are as follows: Wash your hands often. Use a lot of disinfectant. Do not shake hands with anyone. Look familiar? There's not much we can do. Until we have the vaccine...
