Wer viel fern seiht, wird den Typus, der in To Die For satirisch vorgestellt wird, in echt kennen. Sie heisst Suzanne Stone (Nicole Kidman) und sie lebt dafür, im Fernsehen zu sein. Ihr ganzes Leben spielt sich entweder vor oder nach dem Fernsehen ab. Sie wohnt zwar in einer Kleinstadt in Little Hope, doch glaubt, ihr Leben würde im People Magazine stattfinden. In Wirklichkeit ist Suzanne selbst in Little Hope nichts Besonderes. In einem lokalen Sender macht sie das Wetter. Ihr Mann Larry (Matt Dillon) ist auch nicht der Richtige, ihr die grosse weite Welt zu eröffnen. Lieber liegt er auf der Couch daheim. Auf gar keinen Fall will Suzanne schwanger werden, denn das produziert nur blubber und boobs und obendrein könnte sie nie nach Südafrika reisen für eine grosse Reportage. Bald wird Suzanne klar, dass Larry weg muss. Im Grunde weiss sie das bereits während der Flitterwochen. Sie betrügt ihn mit einem wichtigen TV Manager und heuert drei Vollidioten an, Larry zu beseitigen: Jimmy (Joaquin Phoenix), Russell (Casey Affleck) und Lydia (Alison Folland). Sie alle sind geblendet, von Suzanne der wichtigen TV Moderatorin ausgewählt worden zu sein und bald schon knutscht Jimmy mit ihr. Das alles könnte der Stoff für eine Farce sein, doch Gus van Sant macht eine ruhige und nur umso grausamere Komödie daraus. Suzanne ist dumm, eitel und egomanisch (mit nur schlecht verborgenen allzu menschlichen Gefühlen). Suzanne hat Mitleid mit uns, da wir nicht sie sind. Zum Glück nicht! - Anyone who watches a lot of television will know the type of person satirised in To Die For in real life. She lives in a small town in Little Hope, but thinks her life is in People Magazine. In reality, Suzanne is nothing special even in Little Hope. She does the weather at a local radio station. Her husband Larry (Matt Dillon) is also not the right person to open up the big wide world to her. He prefers to lie on the couch at home. Under no circumstances does Suzanne want to get pregnant, because that would only produce blubber and boobs and on top of that she would never be able to travel to South Africa for a big reportage. Suzanne soon realises that Larry has to leave. Basically, she already knows this during the honeymoon. She cheats on him with an important TV manager and hires three idiots to get rid of Larry: Jimmy (Joaquin Phoenix), Russell (Casey Affleck) and Lydia (Alison Folland). They are all dazzled to have been chosen by Suzanne the important TV presenter and soon Jimmy is snogging her. This could all be the stuff of farce, but Gus van Sant turns it into a quiet and all the more cruel comedy. Suzanne is stupid, vain and egomaniacal (with poorly concealed all-too-human feelings). Suzanne pities us because we are not her. Fortunately not!
