So funktionieren Midnight Movies. - The Harder They Come is actually the very first film made in Jamaica by Jamaicans. There were no established channels to market this film in 1972, so they rented a small programme cinema in Venice. Only a few people came to the first screening, but everyone was enthusiastic. More came to the second screening, and then more, and then more... That's how midnight movies work. They are made by the audience, by us, and not by a distributor or even by netflix or Amazon or any other big-budget marketing company. The Harder They Come, at least, found such a distributor and is still as popular as it was in 1972. And the film is fun! With rough charm and cheeky irreverence and a whole lot of lightness! Jimmy Cliff, who is still with us on Saturday nights, plays a pop star from Jamaica. Who knows, maybe a lot of his character is just him? In any case, he is young and clueless and wants to go to the big city. And so we experience some great street shots, almost like a holiday film. Obviously the makers have also seen a lot of blaxploitation films, because Jimmy wins a record deal, records The Harder They Come and then turns to crime. Slowly he rises, kills a few cops, escapes (perpetually) - and his music climbs to the top of the charts. And let's not forget the tender love story with Elsa (Janet Bartley). Those who don't like the ending, but rather the beginning; I understand that. Those who find the characters a bit pale; I understand. But for that, the first 45 are just so good that you can't take anything else amiss!
