- FREE ON YOUTUBE "Last House on the Left" is a bitter, grimy little horror film that is much much much better than anyone had any right to expect. Back in 1972 when Wes Craven dared to do a sort of Ingmar Bergman remake. And there are those moments, unspeakable horror, that still work! In itself, "Last House on the Left" is not a horror film at all, in the sense that it has nothing to do with the supernatural. It tells the story of two suburban girls who go to a rock concert in the city and are kidnapped by a gang of sadistic convicts. They are raped, tortured and subjected to every conceivable horror. Until death. By chance, the perpetrators even spend another night in the home of the parents of one of their victims. The parents get on the trail of the murderers because they find a medallion smeared with blood. It belonged to one of the girls. Driven by roaring frenzy, a father takes up the fight against the whole gang and murders them all. Just like Bergman's original, this incident is based on a true incident. At least that's what is mentioned at the beginning. Or is this an early attempt to make something like pseudo-documentary horror? Anyway, Wes Craven shows all this so directly and powerfully that probably no one would be in the mood for a double feature anymore. You definitely won't be in the mood for a second horror movie after this! There is not a minute where Wes Craven lets you out of this outrageous suspense. The unknown actors act naturally and almost innocently. There is no posturing. Instead, good, genuine and even nuanced dialogue. And the evil exists. Not through a gush of blood, but through the sheer vicious nature of the killers. The violence Wes Craven depicts knows no aesthetics. It is terrible and unbearable. We are moving into the philosophical terrain of nihilistic films like Deliverance. And what remains in the end but a lifelong trauma?
