- Made In America could have failed so disastrously as a film, but thank goodness for Whoopie Goldberg! Her appeal is real, but elusive. I think Whoopie Goldberg is so great because her style is so direct. There are no false highs and lows with her, no unnecessary flourishes. And no effects. She responds simply and directly to the situation at hand. And in the same way, she levels Made In America, which would have gone completely off the rails without her, but works very effectively thanks to her. Goldberg plays Sarah Mathews, who runs an African-American bookstore in Oakland and is a single mother raising Zora (Nia Long). Her husband died years ago and Zora always assumed it was her father. By accident, however, she discovers that she is the product of artificial insemination. Even worse; her real father is a white man! His name is Hal Jackson (Ted Danson) and he may be considered one of the biggest jerks in town. An auto dealer who makes a public fool of himself with stupid commercials. Zora is devastated. So is Sarah, who always assumed that the father must have been black. And Hal, by the way, is also devastated, as he has no desire for his new family. All of this is demonstrated with little subtlety. We get to know Sarah in traffic as she pushes through cars and trucks on her bike, as if they weren't even there. This is the cause of her accident, which puts her in the hospital and.... But if you stick it out for the first half hour, you'll find that at some point such strange action steps no longer matter. At some point, even Hal mutates into a nice guy and no longer represents the grotesque creature we come to know him as. And at some point Made In America even evolves into a feelgood comedy! The credit for this goes to Whoopie Goldberg, because while the plot around her rolls over, producing laughs and melodrama, she simply concentrates on the essentials: How must all this affect Sarah? How much emotional honesty can we expect in such a predictable comedy?
