Es scheint, als wollte er seine Karriere mit diesem Film zusammen fassen, eine Karriere, die auch nicht besonders geradlinig verlief. Godards Filme waren kühn und kraftvoll und originell! Selbst seine Filme aus der maoistischen Phase der 60er wirkten zumindest stilistisch immer noch faszinierend. Schliesslich, nach einem Unfall, wandte er sich vom Kino ab und drehte nur noch Videos. Bis zu seinem Kino Comeback in den frühen 80ern. Seitdem sind Godard Filme mal mehr oder weniger gelungen. In Praise Of Love versucht nun, zu seinen Wurzeln, zum Frühwerk, zurück zu kehren. Dummerweise hat Godard den Weg aber verloren. Godard hat seine Filme immer schon gerne in Abschnitte untergliedert. So auch In Praise Of Love. Zudem ist der Film unterteilt in Schwarzweiss und farbig, bietet Einlagen aus dem Off oder polemische Kommentare. Allerlei Spielereien, aber keinen Zugang für uns Zuschauer. Vermutlich gibt es nur eine sehr kleine auserwählte Gruppe an Godard Fans, die überhaupt irgendetwas verstehen, geschweige denn, sich Zugang zu diesem Werk verschaffen. In langen Dialogen versucht er - wieder mal - zu beweisen, dass die USA ein irrelevantes Land sind. Wie ein ermüdendes Sprachspiel. Hollywood kommt ihm mittlerweile wertlos vor, obwohl seine frühen Filme immer als Reminiszenzen an Hollywood Klassiker zu verstehen sind. Immerhin war es Godard, der den Film Noir wieder belebte! Besonders verhasst ist ihm Spielberg. Einmal wirft er Spielberg sogar vor, mit dem Holocaust Millionen verdient zu haben (hat eigentlich Godard je einen relevanten Film über den Holocaust geschafft?). In Praise Of Love ist einer dieser Filme, der gar nichts bietet, blicken wir hinter die Oberfläche. Nur Leere und Wut gibts da. - Godard seems mighty confused and that's exactly what his film has become. A single confusion! Stupidly, however, Godard has lost his way. Godard has always liked to divide his films into sections. In Praise Of Love is no exception. In addition, the film is divided into black and white and colour, offers off-screen interludes or polemical commentaries. All kinds of gimmicks, but no access for us viewers. There is probably only a very small select group of Godard fans who understand anything at all, let alone gain access to this work. In long dialogues he tries - once again - to prove that the USa is an irrelevant country. Like a tiring language game. Hollywood now seems worthless to him, although his early films can always be understood as reminiscences of Hollywood classics. After all, it was Godard who revived film noir! He particularly hates Spielberg. At one point he even accuses Spielberg of having made millions from the Holocaust (did Godard ever actually make a relevant film about the Holocaust?). In Praise Of Love is one of those films that offers nothing at all, if we look behind the surface. There is only emptiness and anger.
