- We are so used to the classic narrative form of filmmaking - the conventional one - that a Roberto Rossellini film today in the netflix age is a real challenge! Because he broke with the classic form of storytelling! And to this day, there are so few exceptions that broke with the "rules2 of this conventional form (Ozu, Dreyer, Bresson - these are not exactly contemporary artists, after all). The rules of conventional filmmaking are so familiar to us that we don't even notice them anymore - until the moment they are broken! And that bothers us, if we are honest. After all, it is the breaking of the rules that has moved art forward at all times! Before Stromboli was released, one could read a lot about the love affair between Rossellini and his star Ingrid Bergman. They even became parents, although they were both married at the time! One can imagine the scandal in 1950s America! And the film? Just as much a breach of the rules as the love affairs between Bergman and Rossellini? If you look more closely, you will notice that Rossellni also disregards cinema rules in Stromboli (although it is easy to follow the story). But: here characters are not developed further, dialogues remain flat, the actors do not act, not even the images are "beautiful". At most, he outlines his narrative, but never fills it out in a cinematic way. We first see a young, single woman. She has no identity, seems trapped. She does not belong there. She marries a prisoner of war. His house seems inhospitable to her. She lives there isolated from the outside world. It is a prison and even to beautify it she needs his permission. Neither religion, nor motherhood, nor infidelity prove to be a comfort. There is only one way to escape: she must conquer the volcano. Will she succeed in crossing the mountain of fire? Rossellini has left the ending transcendent. It remains for us to interpret it. To fully enjoy Stromboli, we must wish for an ending.
