FREE ON YOUTUBE (DU FINDEST DEN GANZEN FILM FREI AUF YOUTUBE) Alles ist düster und nur wer genau hin sieht, erkennt die nahenden U-Bahn Züge. So beginnt Wild Style. I can sure as hell tell you that it's a crime". - FREE ON YOUTUBE (YOU'LL FIND THE WHOLE FILM FREE ON YOUTUBE) Everything is gloomy and only those who look closely can make out the approaching underground trains. This is how Wild Style begins. Then one of the carriages passes under a cone of light and the music swells. "8th Wonder" by the Sugarhill Gang. You can see the graffiti on the wagons, there are dozens full of tags. 1982, the streets are dirty, the city administration is desperately struggling to keep order. The kids are carefree. Style Wars came at the right time and in exactly the right place. The documentary explores the burgeoning graffiti art, breakdancing and rap. Thanks to the Sugarhill Gang and the film Wild Style, it slowly managed to find an audience outside New York. After all, the Sugarhill Gang's first single sold seven million copies and Wild Style was shown in cinemas all over the world, especially here in West Berlin, where the Berlin Wall provided the longest graffiti screen in the world! Now a series of teenagers are performing who will establish this era. Breakdancers Crazy Legs and Frosty Freeze are improvising and soon they will embark on a world tour. The "writers", including graffiti godfathers Seen, Dondi and Futura, dive into the underground tunnels of New York. They gossip and gossip a lot, try to make a name for themselves. Later, they even consider selling their art in a gallery. Fortunately, Style Wars remains actionless (and thus all the fresher today!). The conflicts, for example between artists and law enforcement officers, parents and passers-by (who want to stop them) are never resolved. "Is that a form of art?" an official asks, and we know the answer. I get to listen to it on Sundays when I visit my parents. They complain about graffiti and drugs in Kreuzberg. For them, this is naturally connected. The officer doesn't know much about graffiti, only one thing: "I can sure as hell tell you that it's a crime". At one point, the New York mayor muses about the possibility of executing murderers and, in this context, about graffiti vandals. When the film closes, the future of the kids is uncertain. One thing we do know; the rise of hip hop culture has only just begun. Please excuse the poor quality of the stream and also our DVD. Style Wars is a TV film that was produced without a significant budget and released in a small edition by the mini-label Cargo.
