- Seijun Suzuki had been used to this for a long time: less budget, limited time and third-rate scripts. Since the early 60s he knew how to make little visual pearls out of them with a lot of passion and imagination. Then the big surprise: Tokyo Drifter from the year '66: An almost surreal genre mix, a film noir, completely committed to the trendy Go-Go 60s! After all, Suzuki's employer Nikkatsu agreed that this way of negating all the rules of filmmaking went too far! Suzuki lost his job. Later he was rediscovered in the course of the "Indie" film movement of the 90s. All of a sudden he was appreciated for his ability to get the most out of every camera shot! Tokyo Drifter deals with the big themes of the film noir: friendship (loyalty!), betrayal, romance and blackmail. Tetsuya (Tetsuya Watari), a yakuza, loses his clients and now wanders aimlessly through Tokyo. A drifter. This may be predictable, but what is so inspiring about Suzuki's masterpiece are the cuts, colors and the unique stage fragment! In the grandiose finale the division into "good" and "evil" remains unsatisfactory. Do these greats still exist at all? The following, even more extreme Branded To Kill (which can by no means be compared to the romantic Tokyo Drifter) finally caused Suzuki's ejection. Suzuki, a persona Non Grata.
