Läuft gerade frei auf netflix - It's on netflix right now. Macht viel Spass! - Friends With Benefits follows the formulas of a RomCom on autopilot and that is exactly what is so appealing! It's about the question of whether it's possible to have sex with someone without falling in love. Like all romantic comedies, Friends With Benefits concludes: No, it's impossible. And of course, it's quite impossible when you're Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, the audience loves them both and wants a happy ending. No romantic comedy with big stars could ever have a different ending. Friends With Benefits, however, makes that clear (and therein lies a crucial difference!). Kunis plays Jamie, a headhunter. Timberlake plays Dylan, the art director of a webpage (which has six million clicks). Anyway, headhunter Jamie convinces Dylan to fly from Los Angeles to New York for a job interview (which earns her a commission). Although Dylan is not enthusiastic, she persuades him so charmingly that he can't say no! By charming I mean that Kunis is in a league with Meg Ryan or Drew Barrymore. After signing the contract, they both meet for dinner and then.... (see movie title). Jamie and Dylan agree to purely physical sex, without emotion. Both are newly separated and demand a boyfriend with these benefits. Very funny sex scenes ensue, requiring a high level of comedic skill. The RomCom formula now demands that they fall in love, encounter obstacles and so on and so forth. Friends With Benefits offers that certain something of romantic comedies: since the frame story is already established, the genre thrives on quirky supporting characters (the likes of Spike from Notting Hill). First of all, Richard Jenkins as Dylan's father, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Or Dylan's colleague Tommy (Woody Harrelson) who is so loudly and enthusiastically gay. And Patricia Clarkson is Jamie's mother; a product of the sexual revolution that has never been reformed. The nicest running gag: Jamie and Dylan know all the clichés of romantic comedies, but are too coll to live up to them. Instead, she at least swears like a beer coach. Nevertheless, Jamie and Dylan's life clearly resembles a romantic comedy. Propelled by Kuni's patter and Timberlake keeping up. A lot of fun!
