Regisseur Francois Ozon reagiert mit By The Grace Of God auf aktuelle Missbrauchs-Fälle in der katholischen Kirche. - I imagine victims of sexual abuse as inconspicuous, even smooth on the outside, as Alexandre did. These people don't want to attract attention. On the contrary; they hide something. Alexandre was abused by a Catholic priest. That was in the 80s. Today he lives as a (traumatized) family father. His former tormentor, of course, still works actively in the diocese. The year is 2014 and Alexandre decides to break his silence. Alexandre turns to the Cardinal. He gives himself: Ignorant. But then other abuse victims raise their voices. An aggressive atheist and a scientist seeking balance. Alexandre is played by Melvil Poupaud. I think it's also about him finding something like a home in the course of the action. The community of men who suffered the same as he did. Director Francois Ozon reacts with By The Grace Of God to current cases of abuse in the Catholic Church. One can call this kind of filmmaking momentary cinema. Cinema that reacts immediately to headlines. This goes so far that a map in the film shows when the original trial comes to court. Is that conducive? Or is it a hindrance? We know and appreciate Ozon as a genre filmmaker who always thinks one step ahead. An authoritarian narrator. One who plans precisely. Here he has to work intuitively. He dares to write a story in which human compassion meets the concrete wall of faith. The characters in the film are unfinished. They quarrel with themselves. There are grotesque scenes, like the one in which Alexandre has to pray with the Cardinal. "We all have our problems"; states the Catholic father of a victim and simply denies the torments of his son. As if abuse was something like puberty. Ozon as a narrator absorbs all the anger of his protagonists. Not as a perfect omniscient narrator, but spontaneously. The moment she unloads. He dares to work in a completely different way and that does his film a lot of good! Anyway, I'm looking forward to the day when there is no church at all anymore. And I will certainly live to see this day.
