- I'm So Excited is about fear and longing and it all takes place almost exclusively on a flight from Spain to Mexico. Due to a technical malfunction, the flight goes off course, so the plane circles (naturally) over La Mancha. This is not only the home of Don Quixote, but also of Almodovar. The crew must try to avoid freak-outs, to calm the passengers. They should be told that they are in an Almodovar film and that freak-outs are part of the inventory. The tourist class is calmed down with tablets. Business class is less high-maintenance, but the three flamboyantly gay stewards do an impressive job. There are sex-obsessed (virgin) psychics and high-class whores with 600 famous customers. Everyone's life is to change from now on, even that of a young woman whose husband is on the plane. In the face of the crash, she realises that the supposed scumbag is probably the man of her dreams after all. I'm So Excited shimmers in gaudy candy colours and strives to be a farce like Almodovar created during the 80s. However, Almodovar fails to bring together the individual storylines of the ensemble piece. If you don't like episodic films, you'd better stay away. Behind the jumble of plots there are fake backdrops, which are probably meant to correspond to the often faked feelings. Almodovar is trying to reclaim the terrain of dirty, provocative comedies. He tries to revive his past (cameos by Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz also stand for this). In contrast to the early work, however, this all seems rather long-winded.
