- FREE ON YOUTUBE (YOU FIND THE WHOLE FILM FREI AUF YOUTUBE) Jakob (Rylance) arrives at the Benjamenta Institute and his whole world is upside down. He is attracted to the beautiful (but fragile) Lisa who runs the institute. Then her condition deteriorates... Timothy and Stephen Quay may feel like successors of the surrealist Jan-Svankmajer. They developed their style through MTV videos and commercials. This free adaptation of a novel by Jakob von Gunten is their first feature film. A live action film, which means that they stage their actors like puppets. There is plot and also characters - but actually it's about the interplay of light and shadow. Found objects reveal a terrible beauty! The institute is a school for servants, led by Benjamenta (Gottfried John). Then a new student named Jakob (Rylance) meets him. He discovers the secrets of the place, which seems like an echo on Poe's House Of-Usher. The German Expressionists also send their greetings! Often the debut of the Quay Brothers digresses. The details at least take up a lot of space. But Institut Benjamenta offers a dry humor, which makes us think of the basic rule of comedy: Not to take what's happening too seriously.
