- Kirill Serebrennikov was prohibited from participating in the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Russia 2018. Allegedly under suspicion of corruption, the director languishes at home while his film runs in the Cannes selection. Leto is a thrilling experience! A wild mix of comedy/drama/musical, set in the underground of Russian subculture during the early 80s. The "stars" of the scene actually work in normal jobs during the day. At night they play in the only rock club that is censored and guarded by the state. Naive and ambitious wannabe rock stars! They love the western glam rock role models and also the punks. Leto is based on the career of Russian rock pioneer Viktor Tsoi (although you can enjoy Leto very well without this knowledge). You don't even have to be familiar with Bowie & T. Rex! Leto really vibrates like a piece of music! It is about loss and nostalgia. The story of a fight for things that are simply unattainable. In truth, Leto is a musical. It starts on the beach as Mike (Roman Bilyk) performs a song for his friends. Then two strangers with guitars appear, finally Viktor (Teo Yoo), a shaggy Asian, songwriter and singer. Viktor's first song sets the whole plot in motion. It's a rough anthem and Mike longs to become Viktor's mentor. Mike's wife Natasha (Irina Starshenbaum) also longs for Viktor... Leto seems like a deeply personal story. In the centre, the triangular relationship. By the way, we learn something about politics and censorship in the Soviet Union, for example when musicians have to submit their songs. Great, the idea of performing all this in black and white with just a few colour inlays! Scratch Animation is what the geek calls it. The music is superimposed visually and accompanied by funny illustrations. As if a whole series of music videos were running in the film. But what these songs are about, what was going on in the USSR and in the world at that time, we don't know much about. Serebrennikov doesn't seem to think that's so important.
