Geht so etwas? - How exactly does reconciliation work? This is the question that Spanish director Icíar Bollaín explores in this film based on a true incident: The murder of a politician by Basque separatists. The murder itself happens very quickly. In the politician's favourite pub. The assassins come up behind him, one of them shoots him in the neck. Is that possible? A politician without a bodyguard? We find out later: this one wanted to retire from politics. In any case, this brief moment will change so many lives. That of the murderers who blow up their getaway car (and later toast the murder at home). But above all, the lives of the murdered man's family. How the murdered man's wife - Maixabel (Blanca Portillo) - rings the doorbell and how her daughter finds out at the holiday camp by the lake. The film now follows the trauma of the crime over decades. In the years that follow, Maixabel is concerned with dialogue. For reconciliation. Against the wishes of her daughter and her friends, she agrees to talk to the perpetrators in the maximum security prison. These conversations form the heart of the film. What makes a person a murderer? The dream of a socialist Basque country? And how can such hatred be overcome? That is what Maixabel is about.
