Lost In La Mancha. - Before you watch The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, go down to our video library in front of the shelf of documentaries from the film section. There you'll find Lost In La Mancha (DVD1166), which documents the genesis of Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote. A project he started in 2002 with Johnny-Depp, but had to stop for the most insane reasons. Well, like a miracle, the film still comes to the cinema! The good as well as the bad news: It has become an unrestricted Terry Gilliam original! Basically, all his films are about the struggle between authority and creativity. In the end, the visionaries and madmen always win! Such as Terry Gilliam, dreamer with considerable standing ability. Since the 80s he has written various screenplay versions of his Don Quixote. The project underwent various planning phases - but was not completed. Once the shooting was stopped because a storm swept away the scenery. Lost In La Mancha. The fact that NOW a Don Quixote film by the 77-year-old director is available at all can confidently be described as a miracle! Undoubtedly a typical Gilliam movie. The focus is on Toby (Adam Driver - who Johnny-Depp should have impersonated before), the uninspired director of a Don Quixote film. He is confronted with his youth work and with the effects the illusion machine of cinema can have on amateur actors. He is surrounded by chaos and an extremely twisty story. There are black humorous moments, which are killed in the bombast of the set and the plot monster that is thought of three times around the corner. Nobody has slowed down Gilliam here! Maybe one day I will also be able to follow his Don Quixote. Who knows, maybe at some point we will have to admit to ourselves that he produced a masterpiece here... far ahead of his time?
