Hier kommt also eine echte Weltraum-Oper! Und natürlich gibt es einen verblüffenden Showdown mit Skeletons gemeiner Ankündigung "I will be back". Masters Of The Universe sieht Roger-Vadims "Barbarella" verblüffend ähnlich. Auf wikipedia fand ich die Kritik der Washington Post: „Little kids at play have come up with craftier plots, better characterization and conceivably more spectacular effects – provided their mothers let them play with matches.“ Das stimmt. Masters Of The Universe ist schön lächerlich und macht irgendwie Spass! - FREE ON YOUTUBE When was the last time a film was opened with a development as threatening as this one? Skeletor tries to become the ultimate ruler of the whole universe with the help of a magic castle, seizes the ultimate power and mutates into a divine being. Unusual? Skeletor even appears on earth and nothing can stop him - except maybe a magic key that sounds like a synthesizer. You have to be a real nerd to realize that this is not an instrument, but our last rescue. The only difficulty: You have to remember the right melody to use the magic key, hurry to Eternia, free He-Man (Dolph Lundgren) and throw Skeletor into a dark shaft. And the Cosmic Key, which opens the gate through space and time, can also be helpful for us humans, for example to prevent parents from an accidental journey... So beautifully kitschy and poppy Masters Of The Universe reminds us of the comic strips of the 30s and stays true to them. Today, as science fiction movies make their interplanetary adventures look as real as possible, Masters Of The Universe is happy to look as fake as possible! And I don't mean that as a criticism. Eternia looks like a big cheap miniature model. You'll probably find a tube of model glue if you look closely. In wise foresight, the legendary B-movie distributor Canon Films has produced Masters Of The Universe for laughs. The film is no better than the Mattel dolls it is based on, and that takes the curse off the material that looked cheap when it was born. So here comes a real space opera! Tinkered with a lot of love. The plot is simple. Skeletor (Frank Langella) on the hunt for the cosmic key, lands on earth. Teenagers Julie and Kevin find the key, which sounds like a New Wave instrument. Canon director Gary Goddard was obviously commissioned to work entirely in the tradition of the 1930s. In the visual tradition of the first cheap science fiction series. Everyone wears ridiculous boots and headgear - and the mask of Skeletor looks like it was from a child's birthday party. So they stand around on their command bridges in front of their decorated magic gates. And of course there is an amazing showdown with Skeleton's mean announcement "I will be back". This threat was never realized, because Masters Of The Universe was a flop and Canon's idea to grow into another major studio was never going to become reality. Fortunately! Masters Of The Universe looks amazingly similar to Roger-Vadim's "Barbarella". On wikipedia I found the Washington Post review: "Little kids at play have come up with craftier plots, better characterization and conceivably more spectacular effects - provided their mothers let them play with matches. That's right. Masters Of The Universe is pretty ridiculous and kind of fun!
