- You will struggle for breath, your pulse will quicken! And then again, you will hardly be able to stifle a laugh. That's how Alex Garland's new, meticulously directed thought-construct works - highlighting his unique skills as a film craftsman and mastermind! As in Garland's Annihilation and Ex Machina, a sense of dread builds early on. And this is sustained for long stretches. Camera, sound and pacing combine to create an almost merciless tension, then build to a ferocious climax and... Men explores the feeling of grief. The English countryside to which our heroine retreats promises healing; it looks peaceful and inviting. The lush woods seem calm and cool - as they so often do in Garland's films. Until they aren't. She rents a stately mansion that offers much more space than she needs - until eventually she has nowhere to hide. Harper (Jessie Buckley), that's her name, and she takes us with her as she fights for her sanity. Before she fled to the idyllic village, Harper experienced tragedy. Is that all in the past or has she just faced a very different trauma here? There is something wrong with this place where everyone happens (?) to be men. To be precise; one particular man in various forms. Sometimes he's a policeman, then a caretaker, then a priest or a bartender. Sometimes even teenagers! All the men are embodied by Rory Kinnear, a British character mime. In each of his incarnations he always remains one thing: menacing. And each incarnation is more dangerous than the one before. While Harper experiences her personal hell here, we become aware that we have long since left reality. At first there is still the possibility that Harper may be paranoid. But this fades more and more. We find ourselves in a plane of hallucinations; everything hums and bubbles. A controlled chaos of film! Technically this is extraordinary, though Garland does less justice to his themes. What is he trying to tell us about women and patriarchy? Garland works with biblical images. But what does all this have to do with the bizarre finale? Garland's ideas are barely tangible - yet provide enough shock moments for a feverish nightmare. This is exactly one of those films that will be discussed afterwards by geeks in our video library and all over the world. And no one will be any closer to a solution.
