Trailer
- A glance into the room of teenager Ian (Lucas Hedges) is enough to know when Mid90s is playing: CDs neatly lined up on CD shelves and source magazines on the bedside table. A poster of the Wu Tang Clan and "Air Jordans" in the closet. Back in the 90s! That was the world before the Internet. They are sacral objects that Ian guards violently. He is the big brother of Stevie (Sunny Suljic). Mid90s is a film of small observations, which knows exactly the subculture (of skateboarding) that is shown there. Then Stevie is beaten by Ian for the first time. Why, we don't know. In the course of the film this will come back like a ritual. Again and again Ian attacks Stevie, beats him up. The mother of the two doesn't even notice. One day Stevie catches a glimpse of a group of skateboarders. He feels it magically! He follows them and they accept his presence. At home he practices in the driveway, but he falls all the time. From the group he learns things commonly called "manhood". Never thank him, because this is gay! The fear of being "gay" is the worst thing ever! Mid90s is the directorial debut of Jonah Hill. You always had the impression that he was improvising as an actor - and that's how you understand his directing style. Let them do it! What happens is the slow construction of a protective armour. A protective armour with which the kids will stand in their own way for the rest of their lives. A wall between themselves and the outside world that they don't even notice.
