- (NOMADEMKINO SHOWS THE FILM IN DOUBLE WITH BERLIN - THE SYMPHONY OF THE CITY WITH MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT ON 35MM ON 21.9.18 AT 20.00 AT SILENT GREEN, GERICHTSTR. 35, 13347 BERLIN) Symphony Of Now was the hit of the year for nomadic cinema! 150 spectators in the evening is really enormous for us (are not the forest stage!). At the end of the season Symphony Of Now will be packed together with his role model, Walter Ruttmann's Berlin - Die Sinfonie der Grosstadt. A double with musical accompaniment, performed with Werner's good old 35mm projector! Solemnly in the former crematorium of Silent Green. Berlin, the eternal party... Johannes Schaff follows in the footsteps of this oversized role model: Walter Ruttmann's 1927 Symphony for the Big City, reinventing it in the spirit of electronic sound. After all, he proves courage: Ruttmann, admired (and controversial) avant-garde artist as a yardstick! Berlin - The Symphony of the Big City is a milestone of experimental docu and co-founded the Berlin myth in the late 1920s. Since I have consciously followed the discussion, that is, since the late 1980s, the Berliner has been looking for the past. The salons of the 1920s. Generations have worked to revive this myth. I can remember discussions about "classical" Berlin in rocked factory buildings. The idea of the salon was reformulated by contemporaries who could hardly look straight ahead. But we had created our Berlin long ago! Completely without nostalgia! Schaff now pays tribute to him with his electronic remake of a classic silent film. But of course Symphony Of Now (what a "modest" title!) also lives on nostalgia. But how about taking another critical look at Ruttmann's original? Sure, Ruttmann developed a perfect rhythm, but not only the film theorist Siegfried Kracauer tried to discover something deep, human in Ruttmann's fragments of pictures. Eventually, the avant-gardist became Hitler's servant! And Schaff? He is also interested in cutting images together to techno sounds. And otherwise? Do we see anything of our social problems in Berlin? Symphony Of Now corresponds to the original in that it is loosely divided into four acts, the course of a day. People, facades and streets are shown in quick cuts. But there is never enough time for details. But there are plenty of celebrities when Rosa von Praunheim suddenly sips through the picture (to the sounds of our avant-garde half-gods Thomas Fehlmann and Gudrun Gut!). Berlin as the techno capital. It's not that new, but it makes sense. But I would have wished for more here & now. So what's it really like in our town? Do people live in it?
