- DISNEY+ MOVIE How would you imagine the live action version of a beloved Disney classic? Just like Peter Pan & Wendy. Everything you love about the familiar classic, you'll find here too. Some may have wished the film had pushed back a little harder against so much nostalgia. But it doesn't. In fact, none of the remakes up to this point have turned the Peter Pan story on its head. Not even Spielberg's Hook (DVD2169). All of them follow the idea that we should regain contact with our inner child. It all begins with Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson) encouraging her brothers to play sword-fighting. And already Peter Pan (Alexander Molony) appears from another realm accompanied by the tiny fairy Tinkerbell (Yara Shahidi). They lead the children through a wormhole near the fabled second star to Neverland (which is on the right). There live the Lost Boys and Tiger Lily (Alyssa Wapanatahk and of course Peter Pan's arch-enemy Captain Hook (Jude Law). Hook, by the way, comes across as more pitiful than villainous this time, even though he orders the killing of the Darling children. Hook's sidekick Smee ( Jim Gaffigan) suffers under this boss who offers as a solution to every problem: Throw more people overboard! In the good camp, by the way, Tinkerbell is Peter Pan's boss - not the other way around. Pan almost seems like the fairy's instrument. All the performances are great, as is the cinematic realisation! And there are fantastically eerie images! This time, however, David Lowery does not offer a real reinvention of the material as he did with Pete's Dragon (DVD7237). Lowery is increasingly conquering this niche as a reinventor of fairy tale material such as The Green Knight (DVD10678), but with Peter Pan he does not go so far as to reveal buried subtexts. He simply follows the Disney principle of giving us what we want.
