Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon) ist ein Junge aus einfachen Verhältnissen, der sich durch das Jura Studium kämpfte und zu Beginn des Films in seinem Auto lebt. Rudy und der Assistent Deck Shifflet (Danny DeVito) sind Handwerker im Gerichts-Gebäude. Gemeinsam bilden sie so etwas wie eine verzweifelte Demokratie. The Rainmaker spielt in Tennessee, dort wo Rudy für den betrügerischen Anwalt Bruiser Stone (Mickey Rourke) arbeitet. Da das Gesetz für Bruiser immer näher rückt, überredet Deck einfach Rudy, als eine Art Strohmann aufzutreten. So geraten sie an einen schwierigen Fall, in dem ein junger Mann an Blutkrebs stirbt, weil die Versicherung ablehnt, für seine Behandlung zu zahlen. Regisseur Francis Ford Coppola lässt nun all das in einem düsteren Licht erscheinen. Immerhin waren die 90er die Zeit der Grisham Verfilmungen: „A Time To Kill“, „The Pelican Brief“, „The Firm“ und nun Coppolas The Rainmaker -ein Projekt für das er sich laut wikipedia sogar bewarb. - Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon) is a boy from a modest background who struggled through law school and lives in his car at the beginning of the film. He starts working at a law firm where most of the work is done by the assistant, whose suit looks like it came from a charity shop. Not your typical John Grisham scenario. Rudy and the assistant, Deck Shifflet (Danny DeVito), are handymen in the courthouse. Together, they form something of a desperate democracy. The Rainmaker is set in Tennessee, where Rudy works for the fraudulent lawyer Bruiser Stone (Mickey Rourke). As the law closes in on Bruiser, Deck simply persuades Rudy to act as a kind of front man. This leads them to a difficult case in which a young man dies of leukaemia because the insurance company refuses to pay for his treatment. Director Francis Ford Coppola now presents all this in a sombre light. After all, the 1990s were the era of Grisham adaptations: A Time To Kill, The Pelican Brief, The Firm and now Coppola's The Rainmaker – a project he even applied for, according to Wikipedia.
