Dafür eignen sich die Original Song Zeilen von Aretha besser: “You’re a no good heartbreaker, you’re a liar and you’re a cheat. And I don’t know why I let you do these things to me.” - At the end, you see the real Aretha Franklin singing "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" during a celebration for Carole King (who also composed the song). Of course, this is almost malicious, because the moment the original appears, the magic of Jennifer Hudson's portrayal of Aretha, which she built up during the past two hours, is broken. The showed up shortly before in a church to produce the album Amazing Grace and sings Aretha's songs. She really sings them and also really great! And we recognize Aretha in her and that is what we love about the icon! Anyway, Respect is an archetypal Hollywood biopic, brilliantly presented with a great leading lady - with all the genre trappings possible: Clunky, familiar melodramatic moments. Hudson, however, saves Respect. She's not just Aretha, she's the whole movie! P.S. What succeeds very well: the many ugly things like domestic violence and sexual assault - the original Aretha became a mother at an early age before deciding to go away to become a musician - are thankfully not treated salaciously. The film resists that temptation. The singer's resulting traumas, however, are never explored more deeply. Aretha's original song lines are better suited for that: "You're a no good heartbreaker, you're a liar and you're a cheat. And I don't know why I let you do these things to me."
