On The Rocks handelt von Familie und Ehe.
- On The Rocks is a great movie and it could be twice as long! It goes like this: Laura (Rashida Jones) thinks that Dean (Marlon Wayans) is cheating on her. Although they have children! Therefore she thinks of nothing else and can't continue writing her novel. She also can't listen to her best friend Vanessa (Jenny Slate) anymore. In short; Laura is in crisis. Sofia Coppola's films are mainly about her complicated relationship with the real world and her famous men who set the limits for her. But: In On The Rocks she even admits for the first time that her career began in the penumbra of the man who shaped her cinematic grammar. And we all know who is meant! That's why On The Rocks is so sensitive and enjoyable at the same time: He is simply remarkably honest! Bill Murray plays the über-father in the finest twist, as if he had just come straight out of an Italian comedy. On The Rocks is about family and marriage. Felix, the father, explains early on - albeit in a friendly tone of voice - that she - Laura - belongs to him until she marries. And still does after that. "Okay Dad"; she agrees, a little insecure. When Laura has long since grown up,
Book author, mother of two daughters, Felix still meddles in her life. And since Laura comes from a liberal and privileged home, she never learned to rebel. Her father, a much-travelled dandy with numerous affairs, elicits at most an eye-roll from her. Yet she remains the little daughter. Maybe that's why Felix senses marital infidelity, since he learns that Dean is working overtime with his new colleague? In any case, he pulls out all the stops to get to the bottom of the matter - and that's how the action starts in On The Rocks. Father and daughter track down their husband in Manhattan. Both roam through trendy restaurants and tasteful lofts and during their tour through the East Coast upper class Laura slowly becomes aware of how dependent she actually is. Insecure in a place where dreams never come true and where everyday life always seems like a Greek tragedy. In any case, I imagine it to be like in Coppola's film.
