- How noble intentions in themselves lead us astray into the Wansinn... Shura (Demons) is a horror film, located in feudal Japan, a dark fairy tale. At first one thinks Shura was a samurai epic, but far from it. Sure, it's about loyalty and honor, but in a nihilistic sense. Shura, a film out of the darkness, a revenge story by avant-garde artist and filmmaker Toshio Matsumoto, who began his career during the 1960s with video films and pictures. One who likes to break rules and that's exactly what Shura does: All cinema rules are overridden here. Exactly that (and the fact that you will certainly never again find a film that plays so virtuously with light and shadow) makes Matsumoto seem so timeless. The story is like an epic of Greek antiquity: Gengobe (Katsuo Nakamura) is a ronin. A samurai without masters. He loves Koman (Sanjo Yasuko), a geisha, - but the supposed love of this woman is spoiled. Shura is sometimes so gloomy that you think you are watching the events from a distance. Like a voyeur. At the beginning we experience the red sun, the sign of hope, then the film dives into black and white... (transl. deepl.com)
