- The best comedian duo ever: Laurel & Hardy. They are simply called Stan & Ollie, which indicates that we see a personal story - not a career. Does that mean; Stan & Ollie doesn't succumb to the typical pitfalls of the genre Biopic, which John C. Reilly in his "Walk Hard" still so uninhibitedly made fun of? Not always, but often the typical traps are compensated by a deep melancholy that characterizes the whole movie. It's about the question how we would feel if we couldn't do the one thing we love so much anymore? Reilly as Hardy, it seems like a tribute. The image of a man whose body takes revenge for the excesses of youth. Hardy 1953 looks tired and only vital when he appears. Steve Coogan as Laurel looks almost frighteningly similar. Reilly & Coogan perform almost synchronously, as if they had actually worked together for decades! We learn, by the way, that Laurel recruited his partner to demand more money. In the past. In 1953 they were on a nostalgic tour of Great Britain. The two men have grown old and haven't seen each other for years. However, they easily regain their routine. A reasonably successful tour, in some halls only half of the seats are filled. Still, people still love them! Just like her parents and grandparents. In order to attract even more spectators, Stan & Ollie even dare publicity stunts. Especially Hardy's butt is now so big that it could prevent her screen comeback after all. The comedians are accompanied by their wives Lucille Hardy (Shirley Henderson) and Ida Kitaeva Laurel (Nina Arianda), who basically mirror the characters of their husbands. Both are a kind of parallel comedy. A screwball comedy. Then the third act. According to the genre rules, the one calls conflict. But this conflict is celebrated so much more melodramatically than usual that I was surprised! Old wounds - wounds decades old! - tear open and the ravages of time gnaw on everything. Physically as well as professionally. Of course, the two of them live only to play. Only the performance distracts them from their own decline. When Laurel comforts the bedridden Hardy at the end, we understand how sad the duo must be. A comedy or a secret drama with a big heart.
