Bis dahin erzählt A.V. Wir verstehen, was in Inez vorgeht. - Here comes the surprise winner from last Sundance (and for those who don't know the individual categories so well: the winner of the grand jury award). For me, Teyana Taylor won above all, thanks to the sheer power of her performance! This year, there will hardly be a better actress and one who reminds us again and again what she really is: an ACTOR. Taylor is incredibly present and we never get the impression that she is reciting some rehearsed lines. Taylor is simply very organic, which benefits this film all the more, as it struggles with credibility problems in the script until the end. We hardly notice, though, so focused are we on her. She plays Inez, a New Yorker returning from Rikers Island. Inez is in her early 20s, but still comes across as a determined woman who has already seen a lot of the world. Above all, she knows how to make it in this tough world, and for that she needs her son Terry. While Inez was in prison, Terry was looked after. Then Terry has an accident and Inez brings him home to her. Inez forces Terry to change his name. Nimand is supposed to know about his origins! And Inez and Terry share a secret from the past... But now the New York of the 90s has changed. While the world outside is changing, Inez simply makes Terry her world. Everything revolves around the boy. At some point she even gets married and yet everything continues to revolve around Terry. There is an ongoing threat to both relationships - without spoiling. Until then, A.V. Rockwell tells the story of this single mother with great truthfulness - until the finale... Does such a great film need such a last third? Does such a film necessarily need a twist? Or are the final scenes manipulative? I mean: whenever the film falters, Taylor holds her head high and pulls us along. We understand what's going on inside Inez. We understand why she needs her son so badly in this world.
