- Nuri Bilge Ceylans Three Monkeys begins on a lonely country road in the rain. The not so young driver threatens to fall asleep behind the wheel, his eyes slowly close. Suddenly! Behind him lies a dead body on the road. Now his eyes are filled with naked panic. No more action in a Ceylan movie! Three Monkeys he presents us as an elegant exercise in style about class thinking, guilt and greed. The fascinating thing about the film are the four characters: each one self-conscious, isolated from the others. Arrested in his personal needs and circumstances. Then, after death in the forest, it all comes together. Servet (Ercan Kesal), the sleepy man behind the wheel who commits hit-and-run this night, is a politician in the middle of an election campaign. That same night he calls Eyup (Yavuz Bingol), his driver, and offers him a considerable sum to take the blame. He promises him a short prison sentence and continued pay. Eyrup agrees. Then we meet Hacer, Eyup's wife (Hatice Aslan), and his son Ismail (Ahmet Rifat Sungar). She's an attractive woman, but she seems to be stuck. What more can life offer her? Ismail is a handsome boy who believes in easy money. Someone who gets on the wrong track. Eyup himself is not the type to ask the politician for any kind of favor. He fully embodies the servant. Ceylan has a lot more plans for us than to finish this story. His characters have no way out, no way out. Of course, things get complicated after Eyrup's arrest. Of course, everything comes quite differently than expected... Almost like in Film Noir, a second level, an abyss, develops. And just like these role models, Three Monkeys shines with beauty! A breathtaking work! While Ceylan's characters seek ways out of their lives, the sky above them remains in its ubiquitous splendour. And the title? You see and hear no evil and do not speak of it? Well, we're seeing how far they get with it... (transl. deepl.com)
